About Us

Water Year 2014 and 2015 compared to Water Year 2016.- Where is our water?

Water Year 2014 and 2015 were dry for certain. However, limited pumping in the Delta exacerbated the problem. Water experts estimate that billions of gallons of fresh water were turned back to the ocean because Endangered Species Act listed species decline are being blamed on pumping in the Delta. This continues into today, where we see above average rainfall, up to 120,000 cubic feet (CFS) per second inflow into the Delta, equivalent to 240,000 AF a day, while pumping is curtailed to 5,000 CFS.. Instead of pumping to store water in San Luis Reservoir to meet the Exchange Contractor water supply needs, the USBR is required to just let the fresh water go wasted back to the ocean because of concern for listed species. The District is involved in efforts to increase pumping, find places to store water when there is ample supply, and ways to improve our groundwater levels.
